These all started as acoustic projects that I’ve been trying to develop for a compilation I’m working on for a while now. They ended up being quite different from what I had in mind, but I’m happy with the result.

[Păpădii] is the soundtrack of “Family Ties“, a short drama about the relationships between a brother, a sister and a best friend, directed by Savvas Stavrou.

Feedback would be pretty good.

[Hillsides] initially started as a soundtrack for an experimental short film bearing the same title (“Hillsides“), but it had to be scraped for a different take.

The music video for [Coffee] was filmed during July 2008 and will hopefully be released shortly. I suppose more details will follow.

Everyone has helped me more than I thought. Sorry for the underestimation, I suppose. The project that I’ve been talking about here and there has been completed. Besides the fact that it was actually FINISHED, it won. We were selected among the top 5 works and are due to receive viral marketing and an official release, which is immense for both the team and the University.

I am sorry to say, however, that we did NOT use the recordings. At all. The executive producers decided that our draft was going in a wrong direction. We don’t feel it was wrong even now, but we had our taste of how commercial film-making works. It doesn’t. Simple as that. Luckily the changes that had to be made were in our liking as well, but it still wasn’t what it was meant to become. Enough bashing though.

Whenever it is officially released on DVD and book, I will post links to it.

The DVD will contain all 5 clips with an additional 5 because the project seems to be a huge success in the eyes of the EU Producers and the book will most likely explain what this is about and how it was made. And why it was made. It should explain why cheques bounce as well, but I have a feeling it won’t.

This is the e-mail the director, Peter Palos, received the night before:

Thank you very much for sending the DigiBeta with your short film for
the E3′ film project.

A few days ago, an international jury gathered in Berlin and viewed
all 28 participating films from students studying in the following EU
Member States:

Czech Republic, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Ireland, the
Netherlands, Slovakia, Spain, Sweden, United Kingdom. Students from
art schools in Iceland and Norway also participated in this project.

The jury was very impressed by the high artistic and technical quality
of the submitted films.

The jury selected 5 films which will be awarded with a viral marketing
strategy and distribution, guidelines for the selection were:

-          Relevance to the theme: the contribution of multilingualism to intercultural dialogue
-          Clear and simple message
-          Fulfilling the purpose of viral marketing

The following 5 films have been selected for the viral marketing distribution:

-          “Babelshow” Stephane Kaas, Nederlandse Film & Televisie Academie, Amsterdam, The Netherlands

-          “De pratglada kossornas park”, Oskar Westerberg, Konstfack, dep. of Graphic design & Illustration, Stockholm, Sweden

-          “Language is music“, Peter Palos, University of Westminster, London, United Kingdom

-          “No fishing”, Richard Meitern, University of Tartu, Estonian Academy of Arts, Estonia

-          “Smile”, Charles Temujin Doran, University College Falmouth, United Kingdom
The jury would like to emphasize that all submitted films are of high quality and that the selection was purely focused on viral marketing qualities.

All films will be launched during the PRIX EUROPA Festival in Berlin on the 18th and 19th October 2008.

In case I’ve NEVER sent you an actual e-mail before, I’m Ovidiu, a guy on the Film & TV Production Course in the University of Westminster. The reason I’m e-mailing you is that you might know a language spoken in one of the countries in the EU that’s NOT English, French, Italian, Hungarian or Romanian.

A group of people from my course are finishing up a VERY important project that will need all the languages spoken in the Union. The project has around 20 babies in it rapping their way through all the languages in Europe more or less – hopefully more.

The lyrics that we need translated are:

“I’d love to have a talk with every person in the world
It would be fun to see what they achieved and hear what they have learned.
We in the EU are so different, yet the same,
Music is the only way we can communicate.“

If you can by any chance record yourself or a friend that knows any of the languages from the Union, PLEASE do. As soon as you can, if possible. The quality can be whichever. We simply need to understand the accent of somebody that’s actually fluent in that language. Use a phone, a camera, a microphone. WHATEVER is within an arm’s length and records sound.

23 themed hard copies were made and will be spread around. Some of the tracks have been featured on various short films and Dark Water has been released in a mix with one of wolfydolf‘s own tracks on a dutch compilation DVD from the One Minute Olympics as the soundtrack of a high quality version of the short film Mono, which will be showcased at the 2008 Olympics in Beijing and in selected workshops in the Netherlands and Belgium.

Sorry the dialogue isn’t in english, but I’ve said everything there was to say at the beginning.

You might like this clip tho. It’s TV on the Radio’s ‘Province’. I seem to be developing a thing for women in uniforms… I think it fits my policewoman episodes quite well. No – better.

The supporting act were Jesu, a drone/post-rock/metal/shoegaze band. They were ok. Too loud if you ask me. Sure, loud is what you’d expect from a concert. But not a full hour of continuous loud, although that’s how drone is supposed to be – continuous, I mean. Still good tho… If you’re going to listen to anything they made, you might as well start with the self-titled album.

Then, the ‘good’ turned to ‘not really good, eh?’ when Mono (post-rock/instrumental) came onstage. They started the show with ‘Yearning’ off last year’s ‘You Are There‘. I managed to shoot it, but had to split it cause of some limitations on YouTube. The clip does not really do them justice, but it still came out good…

I especially liked their japanese or jazzy moments, which were really nicely spread throughout the show. I guess any album of theirs is good, but I didn’t see them being nearly as good as they were live.

And, traditionally, I went backstage to chat with the band. And they were pretty damn nice too.

PS: Mono is not Mogwai.

This was made for the first project, concerning continuity. It was made with no sound. The rules also stated that the story should be comprised of 12 shots that conformed to conventions of shooting and editing for continuity. Although we broke some of the rules, it turned out just right. It also had to be shot on campus, onto miniDV tape and edited in Final Cut Pro.

As the breif reads, the exercise was assessed on our ‘ability to manipulate shots during shooting to create an illusion of continuous time and space, work collaboratively, show coherence and creativity in ideas and technical competence in the various skill areas’.

We’re certainly happy with the result. Hope you enjoy it!

2007, 3PM – My grandmother dies. To her I owe a great deal of respect that at times I might’ve left obscured. Because I am an ass occasionally, in my own way. She basically brought me up. And while she didn’t always agree with what I did or believed in, she was always helping me with whatever she could. Simple granny advice goes a long way. Even if I haven’t always considered that to be entirely true. She is one of the people that made me what I am today and for that I’ll always be thankful. The same day and hour is the day that my little cousin’s mom dies. It wasn’t that good a day, I guess.

I may be far away from all that and won’t make it to her funeral, but I’m still close enough to feel uneasy about everything.

This may not really be relevant for anyone, but you may want to reconsider how everything works in your family. You may not always feel happy with how it all works, but everyone had their part in getting you where you are. And if you respect that, they all deserve respect too.

Sorry if I haven’t posted much lately. I will try and keep everything updated starting December the latest.
